Cooking With A Disability

May 20, 1998

This is an archival transcript of one of our past meetings. We don't have scheduled topical meetings anymore, but we're not opposed to the idea of bringing them back if someone is willing to commit to hosting them on a "long term" basis.

Mimi: oooooh yeah
HelloKit: logging is on
Mimi: wow, look at the croud ;o)
Mimi: crowd, even
In: for sure phoenyxx
Mimi: Today's meeting is on 'Cooking with a Disability'
HelloKit: Give it a couple minutes... people usually flood in the first 5-10 minutes.
phoenyxx: Mimi: I've heard Canadian comedy shows on RCI (shortwave) and the political humor seems more irreverant than American political humor.
Mimi: ik
Mooooooo: where the heck did they call go?
Mimi: call go?
Mooooooo: all go
* HelloKit . o O ( I'm surprised Simon is actually
Mimi: yeah, the PM of Quebec is an amputee and the comedy shows make fun of his limp
phoenyxx: yes Carly, and Charon is now out of work!
vetrob: how do I join the meeting ?
Mimi: LOL
Mimi: if you're here, you've joined, vetrob
phoenyxx: Mimi: geez, do the comedy show producers realize the trouble they'll be in come 2010?
vetrob: thanks
Mimi: LOL
phoenyxx: having to answer to NOP/Canada.
In: vetrob, where r u from?
Mimi: yes, but they're in Cadada :o) Safely away from the ADA
vetrob: 20 miles east of Showlow Arizona
phoenyxx: true, but American infiltrators hehehehe......
HelloKit: Cadada? lol ;o)
Mimi: actually, the PM of Canada had a stroke, and the comedy shows make fun of that too
In: Nice there I bet, vet
phoenyxx: Showlow...what part of Arizona is that?
phoenyxx: Mimi: do they not fear the spectre of the coming of the NOP Canadian Directorate?
vetrob: The foothills of the white mountains, and good trout fishing less than an hour away
Mimi: LOL
Mimi: nope, Simon...ignorance is bliss ;o)
In: Sounds like a pretty place vetrob
vetrob: south of I-40 about 60 miles and west of the NM border about 50 miles
* phoenyxx reminds everyone that the humor presented here

In: vetrob, that is what is nice the quiet, so peaceful :)
Mimi: QUESTION 1: HOW DO YOUR PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS AFFECT YOUR ABILITY TO WORK IN THE KITCHEN? WHAT PROBLEMS DO YOU ENCOUNTER?
vetrob: had to feed myself before the meeting so I wouldn't drool on the keyboard
Mimi: is caps ok with you all?
HelloKit: np for me
vetrob: OK
`jen`: ok with me
phoenyxx: sometimes my hands cramp when I'm trying to cook...I end up having to work slower than I'd like.
Mimi: good
In: ok for me
phoenyxx: plus in the chair counters all look like from the perspective of a small child.
Mooooooo: yep, cool with me
HelloKit: I have trouble reaching the stove, opening cans/bottles/packages, and with my sensitive skin I get steam burns easily.
Mooooooo: My hand problems make it a real pain to flip food over
vetrob: difficult part is standing and stirring for long periods of time
Mimi: flip food over?
*** judi has joined #disabled
Mimi: hello judi :o)
judi: hello everyone
Mooooooo: judi :o)
Mimi: QUESTION 1: HOW DO YOUR PHYSICAL LIMITATIONS AFFECT YOUR ABILITY TO WORK IN THE KITCHEN? WHAT PROBLEMS DO YOU ENCOUNTER?
In: I have trouble opening cans, etc. too
Mimi: that was for Judi :o)
In: hi judi
judi: thanks
In: I have a reacher to turn on the stove.
HelloKit: I also can't get into cupboards, refrigerators, etc.
vetrob: do they make short stove so that I could sit
judi: reaching things in cabinets, picking up heavy pans, opening things
`jen`: they do vetrob
Mooooooo: Carly, will you fit your house with accessable cabinets?
judi: peeling is out of the question
In: judi, did u ever see the reachers they have & peelers
HelloKit: I don't know if it will be possible.
Mimi: WHAT GADGETS HAVE YOU DISCOVERED THAT HELP YOU IN MEAL PREPARATION?
Mimi: why not, Carly?
HelloKit: I can't lift my arms to reach in, I almost need something that opens on top instead of in front.
judi: yes, I use a reacher and I have a peeler, but you still have a little handwork to do and then chopping
Mooooooo: Ya gotta eat, Carly :o)
HelloKit: lol
phoenyxx: My grabber is good for getting cans off high shelves and for picking things up that I've dropped.
*** cutecOol has joined #disabled
In: true, judi, that is what mine is like phoenyxx
cutecOol: HEllo all
HelloKit: The only gadget I have is a key chain can opener for opening sodas... not real useful with cooking :o)
Mimi: DOES ANYONE HAVE ANYTHING THAT HELPS IN CUTTING/SLICING/CHOPPING?
judi: My chair has a lift but I still can't get in those corner cabinets
Mooooooo: what about removing the cabinet doors?
vetrob: there is an item found in some rest. supply stores that cut with elec.
Mooooooo: slow down mimi :o)
judi: My cat would love that
phoenyxx: I just make sure I pace myself when cutting so my carpal tunnel problem doesn't flare up. when I move I'll have an attendant helping with things in the kitchen though.
Mimi: ok, sowwy
*** rose^ has joined #disabled
In: hi rose
rose^: hi all
Mimi: they make this thing that has sharp rollers, and to chop things you just hold it in one hand and roll it back and forth over the food
phoenyxx: judi- no kidding....my dogs would eat the kitchen empty with no doors on the cabinets :-)
phoenyxx: Mimi- think I saw that on TV.
phoenyxx: neat!
judi: Iwhat's it called, Mimi?
vetrob: it's like an egg cutter a little larger and powered with 1 or 2 blades
Mimi: it doesn't really have a name, but you can find lots of different kinds of them in kitchen stores and kitchen magazines
judi: Can you use it with very little grip capability?
phoenyxx: actually one of the things I am doing now is looking for kitchen things to 'collect' so I have everything when I move.
Mimi: I don't find it difficult to use, but it depends on how hard the food is that you're cutting. its easier with soft things
In: can I ask a question?
Mimi: shoot, In
Mimi: where can you find it, vetrob?
In: I do all my own cooking but baking is out of the question, do any of you bake ?
vetrob: I found it at standard rest. supply Phoenix
phoenyxx: cool vetrob...thanks
vetrob: yes
vetrob: I bake
In: do u find it hard vetrob?
Mooooooo: I bake
judi: I only cook when my husband is with me. If I took a large pan out of the oven it would end up in the floor
Mimi: that's good to know, restaraunt supply stores are probably great places to find things that make meal preparation simpler
*** Lily has joined #disabled
judi: hi lily
Mimi: hello Lily! :o)
vetrob: only lifting large items out of the oven, legs give out
In: Moooo, do u like baking
rose^: hi Lily :o)
Lily: hi judi, hi all!
In: hi Lily:)
Mimi: the current question is: WHAT GADGETS HAVE YOU DISCOVERED THAT HELP YOU IN MEAL PREPARATION?
judi: Can I ask a question, Mimi?
HelloKit: If you can get one of those older microwaves that doubles as a convection oven, it makes baking much easier.
Mimi: sure judi, shoot!
vetrob: Mimi> I have the best luck finding things at rest. supply than in special kitchen stores
HelloKit: And they make excellent chocolate chip cookies. :o)
Mimi: what else have you found there vetrob?
Lily: flat-bottomed maesuring spoons
judi: Does anyone have any tips on how to get in the refrigerator easily while in a chair, double door type
In: I always hated baking so quess I can't use my dis. as an excuse
In: not double door judi
HelloKit: I don't mind baking... it's worth the outcome :o)
Mooooooo: Mom has bought stuff from 'Pampered Chef'
cutecOol: hello all!
Mooooooo: lots of neat tools for cooking
cutecOol: hip hip!
cutecOol: horray!!
vetrob: if you have the funds they can find just about anything you may need, I go to Phoenix once a month to go there
In: Mine never turns out eatable
cutecOol: to Kit!:)
judi: I use my slow cooker a lot
HelloKit: lol In
vetrob: they have side opening ovens for example
In: in the summer I use the bbq alot
phoenyxx: one possible solution is MREs :-)
phoenyxx: easy to prepare.
Mimi: mres?
*** `jen` has left irc (Ping timeout for `jen` ppp-60.spocom.com])

cutecOol: i didn't nkow!!

Mimi: that's ok
cutecOol: the topic is! cooking with a disabitlity?!:)
cutecOol: great:)
judi: I get frustrated getting something out of the fridge, esp milk-then firguring out how to get it to where I'm working without spilling it, etc
Mooooooo: There was someone who email me about gadgets but I dont think he showed up
Mimi: yeah, where is he?
judi: I'm sorry, In, I answered incorrectly, my stove has knobs on the side
vetrob: for those in AZ try standard rest. supply in phoenix and Tucson
Lily: judi, where did u get that peeling gadget?
judi: We redecorated our kitchen last year. The bar is low so I can use my chair and under the sink is open, for my chair
In: that is ok judi, my hubby wants to get new stove with knobs on front, ours is reg. but I have a gadget to turn on stove
judi: Service Merchandise
Lily: thx
In: Lily when u go to Halifax go to Harding Medical, they have all those gadgets
Mooooooo: thats cool Judi
judi: Have any of you used a food processor much?
Mimi: for help with cutting, one guy emailed me with a cool trick: he bought a bagel slicer and screwed it into a breadboard, so that he can use it to hold things for him while he cuts with one hand
Lily: great, thx in:)
Mooooooo: neat
judi: good idea
Mimi: I have, judi
Lily: yh!
In: good idea
judi: does it help?
